Preparation creates possibilities. Possibility protects participation.
Not By Bread Alone is a gluten-free cookbook built in a real kitchen, for real life.
These are the foods I make for my own large family—the recipes we return to, the staples I keep on hand, the things I make ahead, and the meals that have earned their place because they actually work in our lives.
Some are simple.
Some are made in big batches.
Some make tomorrow easier.
Some exist almost entirely because I needed to get food on the table faster.
And all of them come from years of learning how to feed a family with food boundaries without making food more complicated than it needs to be.
Because around here, food isn’t just about what is on the plate.
It’s about making participation possible.

This Is Treehouse Food
I don’t cook in a test kitchen.
I cook in the Treehouse…MY house.
There are ten of us, and when everyone is home there might be more because we do life with close family on the daily. Several members of our family require gluten-free food, people have preferences and individual needs, schedules change, capacity changes, and somebody is almost always hungry.
I double recipes because Leftover Day is a household system.
I buy and cook in quantities that make sense for our family.
I keep pantry staples that give me options.
I make mixes ahead of time.
I freeze things.
I use crockpots, griddles, waffle makers, dehydrators, roaster ovens, and other gadgets when they’ll do part of the work for me.
I make food from scratch.
I also believe paper plates are sometimes an excellent household management strategy…don’t come at me, I consider them a better gift than roses.
My goal isn’t to perform cooking well.
My goal is to feed my people well.
Gluten-Free Is the Foundation, Not the Whole Personality
Gluten-free isn’t a special occasion in my kitchen. It’s simply how we cook.
With multiple people in our family requiring gluten-free food, I’ve spent years learning how to make our kitchen functional around that boundary.
And I don’t want every gluten-free meal to feel like a consolation prize for something we can’t eat.
I want good food.
Food people look forward to.
Food that feeds a crowd.
Food that can be packed, reheated, doubled, frozen, shared, and made again.
Food that happens to be gluten-free.
If you’re building your own gluten-free kitchen, the cookbook is only one part of what you’ll find at Life in the Treehouse.

A Cookbook Full of Possibilities
There are recipes in this book that stand beautifully on their own.
There are also recipes that make other recipes possible.
That’s intentional.
You’ll find breakfasts and baked goods, soups and stews, family-sized main dishes, sides, sauces, seasonings, drinks, jams, pantry staples, foundational recipes, and plenty of foods that can become part of more than one meal.
Some are recipes I’ve made for years.
Others came from looking at a familiar ingredient and asking:
What else could I do with this?
That’s how I cook.
One ingredient can have more than one future.
One preparation session can support more than one meal.
One dependable recipe can become something you no longer have to think very hard about.
And a well-stocked kitchen can give you options without requiring you to have every meal planned perfectly in advance.

Make Today’s Work More Useful
One of the most practical things I’ve learned while feeding a large family is that I don’t need to start from zero every time someone needs to eat.
If I’m already cooking, I can sometimes cook more.
If I’m making a mix, I can make enough to keep some on the shelf.
If a recipe freezes well, I can save some for later.
If I’m preparing an ingredient, I can think about whether it might have another job tomorrow.
And if we’re eating leftovers?
Good.
That was the plan.
Leftovers aren’t evidence that my meal plan failed.
They’re one of the ways my kitchen keeps working when I don’t.
Faster Foods
There is a very useful space between convenience food and I made absolutely everything from scratch today.
That’s where my Faster Foods live.
Faster Foods are foods made easier because some part of the work has already been done.
An ingredient is cooked.
A mix is prepared.
Something is waiting in the freezer.
A pantry staple is ready.
Yesterday’s dinner becomes today’s lunch.
A familiar combination means I don’t have to make another decision.
They’re not about proving how quickly I can cook.
They’re about decreasing the friction between needing food and actually eating it.
Because yesterday’s capacity can support today’s meal.
“Presto”
Some recipes exist because I looked at something we regularly bought, needed, or waited for and thought:
I could probably make that.
And sometimes I could make it faster than expected. Those are my Presto-foods.
They’re practical recipes and components that help shorten the distance between I need this and there it is.
No unnecessary ceremony required.

Breakfast, Dinner, Snacks—and Everything Between
Real families don’t eat in perfectly organized cookbook chapters.
Sometimes breakfast becomes lunch.
Sometimes eggs are dinner.
Sometimes a snack plate is the most sensible meal available.
Sometimes we make a giant pot of soup and eat it again.
Sometimes I cook something specifically because I know “Future Nicole” is going to be very pleased that “Present Nicole” bothered.
Not By Bread Alone makes room for that kind of eating.
You’ll find recipes that can become familiar anchors alongside recipes that give you somewhere new to go.
The point isn’t endless novelty.
It’s having enough possibilities to feed yourself and your people well.
Where Trim Healthy Fits
Trim Healthy has been part of the way I feed myself and think about food for years, and I’m a Trim Healthy Certified Lifestyle Coach.
So yes—you’ll recognize that influence here.
But Not By Bread Alone is first and foremost a gluten-free Life in the Treehouse cookbook.
It isn’t an official Trim Healthy cookbook, and you don’t need to follow Trim Healthy to use it.
For those who do, many of the ingredients, recipes, and ways I build meals will be familiar, and my broader Treehouse resources can help you explore how the food you make fits into your own Trim Healthy lifestyle.
And when you want more support understanding fuel, adapting meals, or building a sustainable Trim Healthy practice, I have separate resources for that.

Take What You Cook Into Fuel Flow
The cookbook helps answer:
What could I make?
Fuel Flow helps you explore a different question:
How is the way I’m eating actually working for me?
Fuel Flow is my food and movement awareness tool built around a simple belief: Your story matters more than your streak.
Fuel Flow helps you notice patterns.
What did you eat?
How did you fuel?
What supported you?
What would you like to adjust?
What worked well enough to repeat?
Fuel Flow uses its own flexible fuel language—Fat-Forward, Carb-Forward, Neutral Fuel, and Dual Fuel—with an optional Trim Healthy fueling framework toggle for people who use that way of eating.
That means the recipes in your kitchen can become part of a much bigger conversation about nourishment, awareness, capacity, and what actually works in your life.

Life in the treehouse means More Than One Kind of Nourishment
The Treehouse Bookstore exists because food isn’t the only thing that sustains a life.
I’ve written about marriage
Protection
Resilience
Family
The things we’ve survived
The things we’re rebuilding
And the things I’m still learning to carry differently
Not By Bread Alone belongs there because nourishment is part of that same story.
