This Belongs in Every Kitchen Apothecary
Some spice blends become staples because they’re convenient.
Others become staples because they become part of your family’s story.
This curry powder falls firmly into the second category.
While store-bought curry powders are easy to find, I’ve discovered that making my own lets me adjust the flavor exactly the way our family enjoys it. It’s warm without being overpowering, gently earthy, and fragrant enough to transform simple ingredients into meals that taste like they took far more effort than they actually did.
As a wife, homeschool mom, and cook for a household of ten, I’m always looking for ingredients that help ordinary food feel special without making life more complicated.
This blend does exactly that.
You’ll occasionally find affiliate links throughout Life in the Treehouse. If something has become a trusted part of our home, I may share it here. Purchasing through those links costs you nothing extra, but helps support our family and the work I love creating.

Why I Keep Homemade Curry Powder in My Kitchen Apothecary
Your kitchen apothecary isn’t only about herbs and teas.
It’s also about the foundational ingredients that make nourishing food something your family actually looks forward to eating.
A jar of homemade curry powder gives you an entire flavor profile in one scoop.
Instead of reaching for ten different jars every time you’re making soup, roasted vegetables, curry, or a sheet pan dinner, you’ve already done the work ahead of time.
That’s one less decision on busy evenings.
And around here, I appreciate anything that makes dinner feel more possible.
Fuel Flow Role: Flavor Foundation
This seasoning blend adds incredible flavor while contributing very little nutritionally on its own, making it a wonderful companion across Fat-Forward, Carb-Forward, Dual Fuel, and Neutral Fuel meals.

Homemade Curry Powder
Fuel Flow: Flavor Foundation Serves: Multiple
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon ground coriander
2 teaspoons ground cardamom
1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons ground turmeric
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon ground ginger
Directions:
Whisk all ingredients together until evenly combined.
Store in an airtight glass jar away from heat and sunlight for up to one year, although the flavor is at its brightest during the first six months.
If you prefer a finer texture or there are chunks in your powders, pulse the blend briefly in a spice grinder or blender after combining.
Ways We Use It
This blend works beautifully in:
Chicken curry
Vegetable curry
Red Lentils, Moong Dal and Chana Dal dishes
Roasted Vegetables
Rice and Cabbage Rice
Ground beef or lamb
Sheet pan meals
Yogurt marinades
Dry rubs for chicken or pork
Refrigerator Soups…an easy Leftovers disappearing act.
Coconut milk and Peanut Sauces
Indian Cabbage Curry
Yellow Rice
Indian Cabbage Rice
Too Easy Tomato Soup…this is where my husband loves it.
Egg Curry
It’s also wonderful stirred into Cottage Cheese, Mayonnaise or Greek Yogurt for a quick Dipping Sauce.
Faster Food Tip
One of my favorite weeknight meals starts with leftover cooked chicken, frozen vegetables, coconut milk, and a spoonful of this curry powder.
Everything simmers together while cauliflower rice cooks.
Dinner comes together in about twenty minutes, tastes like it took much longer, and uses ingredients I usually already have on hand.
That’s my favorite kind of recipe.

Building Your Kitchen Apothecary
Every homemade seasoning blend you make is one less mystery ingredient sitting in your pantry.
You can adjust it to your family’s preferences.
You know exactly what’s inside.
And over time, these simple jars become part of the rhythm of your kitchen.
One blend may not seem like much.
But enough little foundations, thoughtfully chosen, become the kind of kitchen that makes nourishing your family feel a little easier every day.
Because I believe that everyone should be Safe, Not Sorry, I want you to be very aware of the ingredients before you trust my linked ones. That’s the Treehouse Standard.
