A creamy protein shake—ready in about five minutes
There are times when I want to cook.
And there are times when I need food faster than cooking is willing to happen.
This Salted Caramel Protein Shake is for the second kind of day.
A handful of ingredients, one blender, and about five minutes turn into something creamy, satisfying, and considerably more interesting than the amount of effort involved would suggest.
Because sometimes I need something fast and filling that doesn’t taste like sadness.
Salted caramel seems particularly qualified for the job. And, it’s a favorite of mine.

Make It Your Own
Once you understand the basic formula, salted caramel doesn’t have to be the only destination.
Try:
Vanilla extract
Butter extract
Maple extract
Espresso powder
Cinnamon
Cacao powder
There is another possibility hiding in this recipe.
Prepared cold, it’s a Salted Caramel Protein Shake—a creamy “Presto” option when I need nourishment quickly.
Prepare those same cozy flavors warm, and it can move into Reme-Tea territory.

Salted Caramel Protein Shake
Yield: 1 serving
Faster Food
Flexible Fuel Recipe
Ingredients:
1½–2 cups water
Your preferred protein powder serving
¼ teaspoon mineral salt
Pure monk fruit extract powder, to taste
¼ teaspoon glucomannan
¼ teaspoon sunflower lecithin
1 teaspoon caramel extract
1–2 teaspoons mild olive oil or MCT oil
Directions:
1. Add all ingredients to a blender.
2. Blend on high until completely smooth and creamy.
3. Taste and adjust sweetness or salt as desired.
4. Serve immediately.
Getting the Texture You Want
Start with 1½ cups water if you prefer a thicker shake. Add additional water until it reaches the consistency you like.
Protein powders behave differently. One powder may make this wonderfully thick with 2 cups of water while another needs considerably less.
The glucomannan also continues hydrating and thickening after blending, so this is a shake I prefer to blend and drink rather than leave sitting around.
A Note About Protein Powder
“Protein powder” isn’t one nutritionally identical ingredient.
Whey isolate, whey concentrate, beef isolate, and other protein powders can have different amounts of protein, carbohydrate, and fat. They can also vary considerably in density, sweetness, and how much liquid they absorb.
That’s why I use ¼ cup as a practical starting point rather than treating every protein powder as interchangeable.

Fuel Flow: Build the Shake You Need
Flexible Fuel Recipe
The protein powder provides the protein foundation; the meaningful carbohydrate and fat sources in the finished shake determine its Fuel Flow.
Neutral Fuel
Use a lean protein powder and omit the added oil.
This gives you a simple Neutral protein foundation that can remain Neutral or be built in another Fuel Flow direction.
Fat-Forward Fuel
Start with the Neutral version and add an intentional fat source in an amount appropriate for your Fat-Forward meal.
Mild olive oil or MCT oil can work well here, as can another fat source that fits the flavor and texture you want.
The optional 1–2 teaspoons of oil in the base recipe can add richness and creaminess, but its presence alone doesn’t necessarily make the finished shake meaningfully Fat-Forward.
Carb-Forward Fuel
Begin with a lean protein powder, keep added fats low, and add a meaningful carbohydrate source such as:
Banana, Mango, Other whole fruit, Oats.
Dual Fuel
Combine meaningful sources of both carbohydrate and fat.
You might keep an intentional fat addition while blending in banana, mango, oats, or another substantial carbohydrate source.
The Treehouse Standard
Safe, not sorry. Always.
