Pumpkin spice is one of those blends you either love all year or tolerate because fall insists upon it
And because fall is my favorite season, I am firmly in the all-year camp.
Oddly enough, though, “pumpkin spice” isn’t necessarily my favorite seasonal flavor profile all by itself. I don’t need everything I drink, smell, or own to suddenly become pumpkin spice when September arrives.
Put it in something baked, though? I’m in. Any season.
This simple homemade Pumpkin Spice Blend is one of the blends I keep in my spice cabinet because it gives me one ready-to-use jar instead of pulling out five different spices every time I want those warm flavors.
It belongs right alongside the other foundational blends in my Kitchen Apothecary: ordinary ingredients that make feeding my people easier, more flavorful, and more adaptable to the food boundaries we live with.

More Than Pumpkin Pie
Obviously, this blend belongs in pumpkin pie—but that’s only the beginning.
I use these warm spices in baked creations like my Pumpkin Gluten-Free Sourdough Bread and Pumpkin Quinoa Loaf, and they can move beyond traditional pumpkin desserts entirely.
Pumpkin also shows up around the Treehouse in decidedly less-dessert-like ways, including Pumpkin Chili and my produce-forward Pleese Sauce.
That’s one of the reasons I like keeping foundational ingredients and blends on hand. An ingredient doesn’t have to stay in the category we first assigned to it.
Pumpkin can be dessert.
It can be bread.
It can be dinner.
It can disappear into a produce-forward sauce.
And pumpkin spice can live in my cabinet in June just as happily as it does in October.

From the Not By Bread Alone Cookbook
This Pumpkin Spice Blend is part of the growing collection behind Not By Bread Alone, my gluten-free cookbook built from the recipes that actually feed my family. It’s a collection of everyday food, family favorites, foundational recipes, and plenty of possibilities—all created for a kitchen where gluten-free isn’t a separate plate. It’s how we feed our people.

The Possible Pumpkin Pie
Pumpkin pie also has a little history in our family.
My husband’s favorite pie is pumpkin pie—but, more specifically, the cooked filling of pumpkin pie.
We met face-to-face for the first time on Thanksgiving Day in 2007 in Oklahoma City. We ate Thanksgiving dinner at his commander’s secretary’s house, which makes pumpkin pie part of the backdrop of the very beginning of our life together.
Then came our first married Thanksgiving, just a couple of weeks after our wedding.
By then I had noticed exactly how he ate pumpkin pie: filling first.
He was absolutely shocked.
Apparently it had never occurred to him that his favorite part of pumpkin pie could simply exist without the crust and that I might know how to make it appear.
Nearly twenty years later, crustless pumpkin pie is still his favorite. And, I do mean he loves just the filling, because he never eats it with any whipped cream, which makes me wonder deeply about how he enjoys it fully.
And really, that’s the kind of kitchen problem-solving I love most.
Not, What is this food supposed to look like?
But:
What part of this actually matters to my people—and what else is possible?
Around here, that makes it the Possible Pumpkin Pie.

A Gluten-Free Spice Cabinet Note
Individual culinary spices are naturally gluten-free as grown, but packaged spices and blends still deserve the same label-reading attention as everything else in a gluten-free kitchen. Manufacturing practices, added ingredients, and cross-contact risks can vary by product and brand.
That’s why the Treehouse Standard applies here, too:
Safe, not sorry. Always.
I don’t ask you to trust my ingredient interpretation—not even my own family does. Read the label. Verify the source. Make the decision that best supports your home.
Use the brands and ingredients that fit your boundaries.

Stocking the Treehouse Spice Cabinet
We buy many of our spices in bulk through Azure Standard, especially because feeding a large family means the tiny grocery-store spice jars don’t always last very long around here. We’re commercial size around here.
If you’re building your own gluten-free spice cabinet or Kitchen Apothecary, you don’t need every spice imaginable to begin.
Start with the flavors you actually use.
A homemade blend like this one simply turns several of those foundational ingredients into something that’s already mixed and waiting for you.
One less decision. One less step. More possibility in the pantry.
